Our Story
Oreni Alefosio didn't start in an office. He started on site, as a young apprentice on asphalt and concrete crews, learning the trade from the ground up. For over 15 years he worked with the tools and the machinery — pouring concrete, laying asphalt, breaking out old slabs, running the gear that actually gets the job done.
That time on the tools matters. It means when Oreni looks at your driveway, he can read the ground, the drainage, the access — the things you can't see on a plan. He knows what a site needs before the concrete truck arrives, and he knows what goes wrong when corners get cut on base preparation. That knowledge comes from years of doing it, not from a training manual.
After more than a decade working for other crews, Oreni started Versatile Asphalt & Concrete as his own business. He's been running it for over three years now, bringing all of that hands-on experience to every job. His focus is straightforward: meet client expectations with quality workmanship. No more complicated than that.

What Owner-Operated Actually Means
A lot of companies say they're owner-operated. Here's what it means when we say it.
It means the person who quotes your job is the person who runs it. Oreni comes to your property, measures it himself, talks you through the options, and is on site when the work happens. There's no sales rep who disappears after the contract is signed, no project manager you've never met, and no subcontractor handed the job at the last minute.
If something isn't right, you talk to the person whose name is on the business — not a call centre. If you have a question three months after the job is done, you call the same number. That kind of accountability is hard to find in this industry, and it's the reason most of our work comes from word of mouth and repeat customers.
It also means we don't take on more work than we can run properly. We'd rather do fewer jobs and do them well than stack the schedule and rush the finish. That's a choice that comes from owning the business, not just working in it.
Standards & Materials
The finish is what you see. The base is what makes it last. We treat them with the same level of care, because a good surface on a poor base is a waste of money.
On every concrete job, we compact a proper base course — typically AP40 or AP65 metal at 100 to 150mm for residential work — before any concrete goes near it. Steel mesh is standard on driveways and slabs. Control joints are placed at the right spacing so the concrete cracks where we want it to, not where it wants to. Concrete is poured at the correct thickness for the load it'll carry — 100mm for standard residential driveways, thicker for heavier use.
On asphalt, the base course is even more critical — 150 to 200mm of compacted AP40 or AP65. The hotmix is laid at a consistent depth and compacted properly so the surface stays dense and water runs off it, not into it. Edges are cut neat against kerbs, paths and gardens.
We use the same materials and methods whether the job is a single residential driveway or a larger commercial surface. The standard doesn't drop because the job is smaller. That's the way it should be, and it's the way we work.
