The Selwyn District is the fastest-growing part of Canterbury, and it's where we do a lot of our work. Rolleston has expanded rapidly with new subdivisions, Lincoln continues to grow around the university, and the surrounding rural land is dotted with lifestyle blocks — each of which brings a different kind of driveway job.

In the new Rolleston subdivisions, most of our work is new-build driveways on flat, recently subdivided sections. The soil here is typically free-draining alluvial gravel and silt — good ground for concrete and asphalt when the base is done right. We compact a 150–200mm layer of AP40 or AP65 metal before any pour or lay, which is what stops the surface from settling or cracking as the ground settles over the first few years. Because the sections are regular and flat, the layout is efficient, but the finish standard is high — these are streets where every driveway is on display.

Out on the lifestyle blocks around Lincoln, West Melton and further into the district, the jobs change. Driveways are longer — often 100 metres or more — and many start as gravel or chipseal runs that the owners want upgraded to a proper asphalt or concrete finish. Long rural drives are where asphalt often makes economic sense: it's faster to lay over a large area, drivable within days, and handles the gentle ground movement that comes with rural land better than rigid concrete. The Selwyn District falls under Selwyn District Council. Vehicle crossings need council approval and must meet Selwyn's specifications, which differ from both Christchurch City and Waimakariri. The forms, fees and standards are all different. We handle the crossing application as part of the job where it's needed, so you're not left chasing paperwork.
