How Much Does an Asphalt Driveway Cost in NZ?
A straightforward pricing guide from a Christchurch contractor who lays both asphalt and concrete.
The Short Answer
Most asphalt driveways in Christchurch cost between $60–$100 per square metre installed, depending on size, ground preparation, and access. A standard single driveway typically ranges from $5,000–$10,000.
What Affects Asphalt Driveway Cost?
Every site is different. Here are the main factors that change the price per square metre.
Size & Area
Larger driveways usually have a lower cost per square metre because the setup, machinery, and transport costs are spread over a bigger area. Small jobs cost more per metre to cover the fixed overheads.
Ground Preparation & Basecourse
A driveway is only as good as what's underneath it. If your site needs extensive excavation, soft ground removed, or a lot of new AP40 basecourse brought in and compacted, the price will go up.
Existing Surface Removal
Breaking out and dumping an old concrete or asphalt driveway adds to the cost. Tip fees in Canterbury are charged by weight, and concrete is heavy, so disposal is a real factor.
Site Access
If we can get trucks and machinery straight onto the site, the job is faster and cheaper. Tight access, narrow gates, or steep sections that require hand-barrows will increase the labour time.
Is Asphalt Cheaper Than Concrete?
Generally, yes. Asphalt costs less upfront and is faster to lay, while concrete costs more but lasts longer and requires less maintenance. The right choice depends on your budget, your section's gradient, and how long you plan to stay in the house.
